Dress for SuccessJob interviews can be very stressful, especially if this is your very first interview after graduating college or perhaps you’re changing careers or have been unemployed for a while. Today’s job market is super competitive with upwards of 250 resumes received for a single corporate job opening. According to an ERE report, of those 250 applicants, approximately only 4-6 will be offered the opportunity to interview for the open position.

Congratulations! You are one of the lucky few that made it to the interview phase. You’ve polished your resume and answered mock interview questions. Now for the big question… what do you wear?
You have about 7 seconds to make a first impression on someone. In business interactions, it is crucial to make a good first impression. First impressions are more heavily influenced by nonverbal cues vs. verbal cues. During the interview process remember the following key tips:

  • Have a strong handshake
  • Smile
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Make eye contact
  • Straighten up your posture
  • Be confident

What To Wear During A Job Interview

Traditionally, men and women have worn a suit during job interviews. That is not necessarily the requirement in the 21st century business culture today. However, what your wear to a job interview does make a statement about you before you even open your mouth. Research the company before your job interview to get an idea about what the culture and dress code might be like at that company or industry in general. If you’re applying for a position at a local college pub then you probably won’t need a suit. However, if you’re applying to an investment banking firm then you best be wearing a suit! It’s always best to err on the side of caution and dress more formal.
To make a good impression during your job interview consider the following tips:

Invest in an interview suit

It’s always best to have quality professional-appropriate attire in your wardrobe for important occasions such as job interviews, graduations, funerals, etc. Quality suiting can be an expensive investment. Pick options that are more classic and traditional that will probably not go out-of-style anytime soon. Neutral colors such as black and navy are good options for both men and women. If you’re strapped for cash then check out Goodwill and thrift shops for gently used suits. Charities, such as Dress for Success, help underserved women with suits and finding jobs, so check out those options out as well.

Invest in a quality pair of shoes

You may have a million dollar suit, but if it’s paired with a ratty old pair of shoes, you won’t look like a million dollars. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on a good pair of shoes, but find a pair that looks professional and clean. Women can wear a nice pair of flats or a low, conservative heel. Men should invest in a nice pair of loafers or lace-up shoes. It’s best to stick with neutral colors and make sure the shoes are clean before setting foot in any job interview!

Dry clean and tailor your suit

If you’re on a budget then you can skip this option. However, make sure your suit fits you well and it is clean. Iron your wrinkles! If you can afford it, have your suiting pieces dry cleaned and tailored for a cleaner, more professional look. Often times if you buy a $100 suit off the rack and have it tailored to your body, it will look like a $1000 suit.

Pay attention to grooming

The big mistake most people make is wearing fragrances and perfumes. Many people have allergies so avoid wearing any scents. Deodorant should be sufficient. Make sure your hair is groomed and neat. Clean and trim your fingernails. Ladies, keep nail polish colors neutral and makeup to the minimal and professional.

Limit and pay attention to accessories

Don’t over-accessorize! A watch, tie, and simple belt is good for men. A classic necklace, such as a strand of pearls, and a watch should be sufficient for the ladies. The goal is to look professional.

Of course dressing the part isn’t going to land you the job. Go to an interview prepared with several copies of your resume and personal references. Do your research about the company and the position before setting your foot in the door. Ask questions and show interest in the job and company. And last but not least, send a handwritten thank you note to each person who interviewed you!
